A Stone to Touch,
a Story to Keep

I scanned the stone for the first time on what would have been our anniversary. Forty-two photographs I had never seen, three voice notes from our grandchildren, and a letter Patrick had written me the year before he died. The most thoughtful gift our family has ever been given.

Bess was with our family for fourteen years. The garden stone sits where her bed used to be. My daughter brings her phone to it every morning before school. Three months on, none of us are ready to put her bed away ÔÇö but the stone has made the room feel less empty.

The pendant arrived two weeks after Mam's funeral. I haven't taken it off since. The whole family has the same link ÔÇö eighty-one years of photographs, the recipe for her brown bread in her own handwriting, the only recording we have of her singing. I keep finding things I never knew about her.

I had Storm for nineteen of his twenty-two years. The bronze plaque is on the stable door. Every new horse that comes into the yard, we scan it and tell them about him. It sounds soft, but it has made the yard feel like a place that remembers.

Losing my brother at thirty-one broke the family. The memorial we built together ÔÇö my parents, my sister-in-law, his friends from school ÔÇö has become the place we all meet on his birthday. People add a memory, a photograph, a song. It is the only thing about losing him that has felt like building, not just losing.

My grandfather built the house we now live in. The bronze plaque is on the porch. His memorial has the original blueprints he drew in 1962, his war letters, and a video my dad made of him explaining how he laid the foundation. My children will know him.

Bramble was a rescue. We had her for seven good years. The collar tag is on the new dog now ÔÇö a small one we picked from the same shelter. The memorial has every photo we have of Bramble, and a paragraph I wrote about her on the night she died. The new dog has her own page that links to Bramble's.

I built this as a 75th birthday gift for my mother. Her whole life ÔÇö every photograph my aunt could find, every letter, the recording she made of her grandmother in 1979. She wept when she scanned it. Then she added three things of her own. The Living Legacy is the most loved gift I have ever given.
