A short guide to building a memorial when you don't know where to start

You do not need to start at the beginning. Most families don't. The first thing most people add to a memorial is the most recent good photograph ÔÇö the one that looks most like them ÔÇö and a single sentence. That is enough for week one.

Week two is often a song. Week three, a voice note that someone forgot they had. By week six, most memorials have between forty and a hundred items. That is the average. There is no goal.

The first afternoon. Open the memorial builder. Add the cover photograph. Write one sentence. Save. Close the tab. The rest is patience.

The first week. Add a song they loved. A voice note if one exists. A second photograph from another decade.

The first month. Invite contributors ÔÇö up to twelve people. You will be surprised what they have.

The first year. Add the things that come back to you. Birthdays. The way they laughed. The recipe. The letter.
