How the QR is bonded: a workshop letter

Every QR that leaves us is bonded in the same room, on the same bench, by one of three people. The process takes about eleven minutes per keepsake, and it has not changed since the first prototype in 2022.

The QR begins as a chemically-etched metal disc, three millimetres thick, ordered in small batches from a foundry in the Midlands. Each disc is unique to one memorial ÔÇö there are no duplicates.

The disc is set into a recess in the keepsake. A sapphire-glass window ÔÇö the same material used in luxury watch faces ÔÇö is laid over it, with a thin bead of marine-grade resin between the metal and the stone. The assembly is pressed under three hundred kilograms for forty seconds, then left to cure for eighteen hours.

Every assembly is then salt-spray tested for sixty minutes ÔÇö the rough equivalent of forty years of British coastal weather. About one in two hundred fails the test. Those go back to be re-bonded.
